1 May – Workers’ Day
Today, 1 May, is Workers’ Day in South Africa – and most of the rest of the world too. Here, the day is observed in the context of the dual struggle by workers to (a) get a fair shake on the value of their labor from business and (b) dismantle the racist system of apartheid, which entrenched race-based labor exploitation.
Practical note on SA public holidays: banks and post offices are closed, as are many shops; and trains, buses and minibus taxis run limited services.
