Where is it? In the center of the park, on a rocky ridge overlooking the impressive Olifants River. This camp has the best views of any in the park, and gets SA Logue’s Best of Kruger award.
How large is it? Medium-sized – feels like a small camp, but has the amenities of a big one. Just right!
What price range? This camp is in the medium price range, for Kruger accommodation, although there are two “special guest” cabins that cost a bit more.
What kind of facilities does it provide? Accommodation, night drives, bush walks, restaurant, laundry and shop. The cabins at Olifants are older-generation, and so not as modern or comfortable as those in newer camps. That said, there’s not better place to stay in Kruger for views of the park.

Camp notes: This is my second-favorite camp in Kruger, both because of its stunning views – the river is illuminated at night, and guests shine spotlights down on its banks to catch any animals that have come for a drink – and its intimate feel. When booking, it’s essential to request a perimeter chalet with a river view. Some of the chalets don’t have kitchens or cooking utensils – make sure you know what yours has in advance!
What you might see getting and staying there: Cheetah and lion are first prizes in this area – the roads between Satara Camp and Olifants are particularly good for lion. Also look out for Nile monitors – large, brilliantly colored lizards – in the Olifants river. Last, a trip to Olifants wouldn’t be complete without several elephant sightings – count on it!
