What? A1 Grand Prix of Nations

Essential info? The A1 Grand Prix – akin to a World Cup of motor racing, which runs during F1’s off-season – arrived in Durban for the 7th of its 12 races on Sunday. SA driver Stephen Simpson took 5th place, his first podium finish. The race was held at the city beachfront – 50,000 crowded the streets – and by all acounts was a spectacular success. South Africa’s Second City will doubtless reap ample rewards, in terms of new tourism, from the enormous TV audience which A1 racing attracts.

What? African Cup of Nations (CAF Cup)
Where? Alexandria, Egypt
Essential info? Utter disgrace for South Africa’s national soccer side, Bafana Bafana, which lost 1-0 to Zambia in its final CAF Cup match. SA finishes the tournament with no wins, no goals, no points, and its worst string of performances ever.
