Pack a Lunch for 2010
It’s official: South Africa’s restaurants – from the lowliest take-away to the classiest brasserie – are run by devious schemers who have better things to do than look after the health, safety and satisfaction of their customers.
At least, that’s the conclusion a visitor might come to, upon hearing the news that less than thirty of our many thousands of eateries have any sort of rating from the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa.
Now, with an eye on the 2010 World Cup, the Council is trying to get restauranteurs to catch up with their counterparts in the accommodation business, who largely seek out their 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-star ratings unprompted. The goal: to have 40% of SA’s eateries receive a grading – a voluntary process – in time for the Cup’s first kickoff.
What this means is that you will have a 4-in-10 chance of knowing what you’re in for when seeking a post-match supper, come the glory days of 2010. Those would be generous odds, if they pertained to, say, the SA national soccer team’s breaking into the Cup’s second round, but they’re fairly ominous when they pertain to, say, your stomach.
Of course, you can always read SA Logue’s Food & Drink pages for tips on where to sup – or just pack a lunch! (Start packing, erm, now.)
