Good Friday in South Africa
Today is Good Friday, a significant day on the Christian calendar, and a public holiday in South Africa – the beginning of the longest of this country’s famous long weekends. South Africans don’t go back to work until next Tuesday.
Practical note on SA public holidays: banks and post offices are closed, as are many shops; and trains, buses and minibus taxis run limited services. Traffic will also be fairly intense, as holidaymakers dash hell-for-leather to their destinations on Thursday and Friday, then scramble back at the last possible minute for work on Tuesday.
