Further Insight & Opinion
Streetwires is an empowerment project that works with formerly unemployed men and women to create fun and functional pieces out of wire and beads.
Started in 2000, the project now employs more than 100 adults, who use their skills to create key chains, wire baskets, napkin-ring holders and knick-knacks. You can find Streetwires items in 15 different countries; however, its main storefront and production center is in the Bo-Kaap. It is located close to Monkeybiz, another project focusing on arts and employment. The first rural Streetwires outpost opened in 2005, three hours’ drive from Cape Town.
Prices are reasonable and many items are small, perfect for packing and making great South African gifts. Tourists can keep their receipts and items for VAT refunds at the airports.
