There are plans afoot to decommission Durban International Airport in favor of King Shaka International Airport, a new facility currently under construction 35kms north of Durban, which is expected to open a few months ahead of the Fifa World Cup 2010 Tournament.

King Shaka International Airport

Initially the airport will have one passenger and one cargo terminal. It will be situated along the northbound N2 freeway and will be accessible directly from this road as well as the M4 coast highway. Direct rail access is part of the master plan for the airport.

Buses, shuttles and metered taxis will be available.

Warning

South Africa is a high crime region, so extra care is advisable at all times. This is particularly true when choosing taxi operators and busses, and it makes sense to always check that your carrier is a listed, reliable and registered operator, which can be confirmed at any of the many information centres.
