Durban’s “The Golden Mile” Kwazulu-Natal

Durban itself is probably best known for its “Golden Mile”, a 6km walk along the golden sands, that stretches from the Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World in the north to uShaka Marine World in the south.

Both uShaka Marine World, Africa’s largest marine park and home to an aquarium and dolphinarium, Wet ‘n Wild water park and numerous top class restaurants and shops and Suncoast Casino, a casino complex with a private beach, hotel, restaurants, shops and public entertainment facilities, are fairly new and very popular additions to the mile.

The mile provides many locations for sun worshippers to lounge, families to enjoy some quality time together in the sea, the active to part-take in surfing, fishing, kite surfing and beach volley ball, shopaholics to barter with traditional market vendors and other hawkers with a selection of Zulu art and crafts and with many restaurants and cafes along the mile, you’ll never go hungry or thirsty.

The Beach Café is very popular and set right on the beach, where you can get sand between your toes whilst sipping on a Sex on the Beach! Another popular hangout is Joe Kools, a newly refurbished bar and restaurant, which turns into a nightclub when the sun goes down.

North Beach, Dairy Beach, Bay of Plenty and Snake Park are popular surfing beaches separated by the piers and are often host to top class surfing competitions such as the Quiksilver Africa Pro and Mr Price Pro, both WQS events! Because of the surfing nature of Durban, us Durbanites are known as being very laid back and easy going, which we are very proud of it, especially in this modern day and age of the rat race.

There is always an event, whether it be surfing, sailing, kite surfing, beach soccer or fashion shows, going on along the mile, so check out www.durbanexperience.co.za for information on events happening throughout the year.

One event that caught my attention for the coming week is the Durban International Blues Festival (25 April to 1 May), which will be hosted at a variety of venues on selected dates and tickets start at R85.
