Welcome to the Republic of Hout Bay
Did you know? South Africa wholly surrounds two independent republics: the mountainous “Switzerland of Africa”, Lesotho; and the coastal “Swansea of the Western Cape”, the Republic of Hout Bay.

For visitors to Cape Town, the latter’s easily reached: just drive along the coast road (the M62) that winds from Sea Point to Llandudno via Camps Bay (map). Once you’ve crested the hill known as “Suikerbossie”, you’re in the Republic. (Alternate routes: from Noordhoek via Chapman’s Peak Drive, and from Constantia via Constantia Nek/the M63.) You’ll find plenty of tips on what to see and do – not to mention where to stay – in this sleepy little country via SA Logue’s Hout Bay tag. Don’t forget your passports!
