Something Wet (and Big) this Way Comes at Last!
As the minders of an event whose chief sponsor is a drink noted for its massively high caffeine content, the organizers of the Red Bull Big Wave Africa surfing competition sure are patient.
Unlike in previous years, the waiting period for the genuine article – the huge rollers just outside of Hout Bay that can reach 30 feet in height, at the world-famous Dungeons surfing spot – has been extended to 90+ days. It used to be just three weeks.
Eighteen invited surfers – and twenty more alternates – have been on standby since May 8th, and, according to the latest surf report, they might finally have something to get excited about. While the weekend’s reasonably big swell at Dungeons is expected to die down in the next few days, Wavescape’s forecast for next Tuesday and Wednesday is for a “classic big West swell” – meaning waves of up to 20 feet and more.
If this forecast doesn’t change, then look for the Red Bull BWA website’s indication light to move from red – “hold” – to yellow – “get ready!” – this weekend.
