Very pleasant, small, convenient and secluded beach on the False Bay coastline. Good surfing spot – especially for beginners.

Directions: Follow the Main Road (M4) south from Muizenberg to St. James. Park next to the St. James community tennis court, and duck through the nearby “subway” (tunnel underneath the train tracks) to reach the beach.

Best times to go: If you’re surfing, anytime when the waves are good; if you’re sunbathing or picnicing, an early start is essential.

What’s nearby? Kalk Bay, with its shops, harbor and restaurants, is a 10 min. walk further down Main Road.

Review
How Danger Beach got its name is a puzzle, for the only danger the small, pleasant strip of sand – which doesn’t boast much in terms of amenities, but is nearby Kalk Bay’s many diversions – seems to pose to beachgoers is the lazy whiling away of an entire afternoon. True, there is a large educational sign about great white sharks at the beach’s entrance, but that seems to have been posted at random – the surfers usually bobbing offshore don’t seem too concerned.

Danger Beach is a great place to learn to surf, because the waves aren’t too heavy, but come in at surfing height regularly enough to guarantee a good day’s exercise. Don’t forget that the sun sets early on this side of False Bay – it gets dusky by 5 p.m. – so it’s best to schedule morning jaunts to this beach, or early-afternoon picnics.
