An Afternoon Out on the Tigger 2
A calm, clear day in Cape Town – at any time of year – affords visitors a chance to get out on the water and see the city’s majestic coastal mountains from a new perspective.
For one of the most relaxing – and visually spectacular – marine expeditions, find your way to Hout Bay, and climb aboard the sleek Tigger 2, a 53-foot catamaran that is moored just a few steps down from The Lookout Deck restaurant, at the Hout Bay Boat Club (map).

The Tigger 2 runs an extremely pleasant, 1.5 hour champagne cruise on a daily basis – booking is recommended (R180 per person) – that tracks the coastline of the bay, gliding past the Sentinel, following the contours of Chapman’s Peak, and rounding off within a stone’s throw of the Kommetjie lighthouse.

There are many places on this roomy yacht to stand and take in the views – first choice being the back deck, which has its own gas braai. Champagne and snacks are complimentary – they go “down the hatch” with ease as the vessel meanders among the bay’s pretty inlets.

The most interesting moment during the cruise, for me, was when the Tigger 2 turned back, and we could suddenly see Table Mountain from an unfamiliar perspective – the rear. The unmistakeable plateau stands just above the mountains that shape the Hout Bay valley, but can only be viewed from a good way out on the water.

From July to September, Hout Bay is the temporary home of several pods of Southern Right Whales, which won’t shy too far from the Tigger 2 – this is an excellent way to get a closer view of the beautiful sea mammals.

In addition to short outings, the Tigger 2 offers a complete range of full-day and sightseeing cruises, and can be booked for fully-catered corporate and private functions. Sport fishing and scuba diving are also offered, as is – this is fairly unusual – clay pigeon shooting.
