Tulbagh Tavern: Hidden little pub.
Cape Town, always manages to surprise me. Yesterday, I was doing some running around and found this tiny pub in Tulbagh square. Cape Town does not have a traditional pub culture like in England, so every now and again one longs for the dank, smoky recesses of a “local” to sip a beer and eat soggy fish and chips.
The Tulbagh tavern is such a place and dare I say the most authentic English pub in Cape Town. It has been in this location over 35 years, and boy does it show. Bald velveteen upholstery, huge mock Tudor wooden beams and that all important stale-beer room freshener they use.
Well worth a look if you are jonesing for a pint and some bad conversation.
Tulbagh Tavern is located IN Tulbagh square, in the foreshore area off Riebeek Street.
