Shriek! Watery American Beer for 2010 World Cup
We’ve all heard the joke that goes, “Why is drinking American beer like making love in a canoe – ?” The punchline is unprintable, and so was the reaction of many South Africans to the announcement, yesterday afternoon, that Budweiser – and Budweiser alone – will be sold in the stands during the 2010 World Cup.
Unfortunately, this is the Budweiser from Anheuser-Busch, the mass-market, piss-poor beer specialists based in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, and not the one, true, original white-beer Budweiser that is still brewed by Budvar in the Czech Republic.
Anheuser-Busch is the world’s largest brewery; the number two spot is occupied by – irony of ironies – South Africa’s own SAB Miller. SAB is another mass-market specialist, though its South African beers aren’t as piss-poor as its rival’s. Its American beers, on the other hand…
