Trekker’s Hostel Highlights: Buccaneers Backpackers, Wild Coast
Hidey Ho’ fellow travelers! It’s time to revisit an amazing hostel, or rather a backpacker’s village. Spread over 8 hectares of wild coastal forest hillside – with your choice of either the Indian Ocean or the Cintsa Lagoon to splash around in – Buccaneers Backpackers’ outstanding reputation reaches most backpackers before they even leave Cape Town or Joburg.
I came across Buccaneers on my way to Durban and knew it would be a must on my return trip. As it turns out I got to stay at this fabulous place twice! The whole vibe is fantastic and the staff makes you feel at home and part of the family.
The dorms, if you can call them that, are actually individual bungalows scattered throughout the property. The only drawback is the steep climb to get to the bar – but at least its all downhill at the end of the night. Breakfast is served in the main house and the choices are too numerous to mention. Most dinners are served in the bar – except for the Indian Feast, scrumptious is an understatement! I always over filled my plate and somehow still managed to go back for more, more curry, more papadams, more naan, more more more! For lunch there are yummy sandwiches and a constant supply of candy, cookies and fabulous “Sunshine” juices (I highly recommend the pineapple).
Now for the icing on the cake, you might think this place is perfect right? Well how about free evening activities with free wine: watch the sunset from the dunes, play a game of volleyball, go on a booze cruise down the lagoon, plus numerous others. Don’t forget the free use of kayaks and the fabulous surf school. I spent an afternoon at the Cinsta East School painting the faces of 300 smiling kids, very satisfying. For those of us who like to be pampered once in a while be sure to swing by the beauty bungalow. Pedicures, manicures, facials and massages are all on offer and are just the thing after a long trip in the wilderness.
There are so many wonderful things about this hostel I could go on for pages, but better leave some things for you guys to discover. Don’t want to let out all the fantastic secrets that Buccaneers has to offer.
Thanks to all of you for traveling with me on my return trip to South Africa. It seems that I have run out of hostels to highlight and Baz Bus routes to explore, but I am sure I will see you all around – whether its on the SouthAfricaLogue.com or out there travellin’.
So till next time, keep trekkin’
